Afternoon Session (1:30 PM - 2:30 PM): Personhood, Identity, and Culture

This 5-week programme introduces students (ages 13-16) to key anthropological concepts around personhood and culture. Through interactive discussions, activities, and reflective exercises, students will explore how different societies define what it means to be a person and that common thought that human = person isn’t necessarily correct.

Week 1: What is Personhood?

  • Introduction to Anthropology & Personhood
  • Different cultural perspectives on personhood
  • Activity: Create a mind map of what makes someone a 'person'

Week 2: ‘Un-Personed’ Humans(1)

  • The beginning of personhood
  • Personhood beyond ‘life’
  • Activity: Design a rites of passage

Week 3: ‘Un-Personed’ Humans(2)

  • The effects of disability on personhood
  • The effects of race/ethnicity on personhood
  • Activity: Discussing esteemed people with disabilities and people of colour, and their personhood

Week 4: ‘Personed’ Non-Humans

  • Non-human animals as persons
  • AI and robots as persons
  • Activity: Debate the personhood of Oksana Malaya

Week 5: Summary

  • Considering personhood as a scale rather than a binary
  • Activity: Create a poster showing how we now understand personhood
  • Activity: Court case role-play about the personhood of different beings

By the end of the programme, students should have a broader understanding of personhood across different cultures and contexts. They will engage in critical thinking, creative expression, and debate, fostering their ability to view the world through an anthropological lens.
