Afternoon Session (1:30 PM - 2:30 PM): Personhood, Identity, and Culture with Kat who is studying her PHD in Anthropologie
This 5-week programme introduces students (ages 13-16) to key anthropological concepts around personhood and culture. Through interactive discussions, activities, and reflective exercises, students will explore how different societies define what it means to be a person and that common thought that human = person isn’t necessarily correct.
Week 1: What is Personhood?
Introduction to Anthropology & Personhood
Different cultural perspectives on personhood
Activity: Create a mind map of what makes someone a 'person'
Week 2: ‘Un-Personed’ Humans(1)
The beginning of personhood
Personhood beyond ‘life’
Activity: Design a rites of passage
Week 3: ‘Un-Personed’ Humans(2)
The effects of disability on personhood
The effects of race/ethnicity on personhood
Activity: Discussing esteemed people with disabilities and people of colour, and their personhood
Week 4: ‘Personed’ Non-Humans
Non-human animals as persons
AI and robots as persons
Activity: Debate the personhood of Oksana Malaya

Considering personhood as a scale rather than a binary

By the end of the programme, students should have a broader understanding of personhood across different cultures and contexts. They will engage in critical thinking, creative expression, and debate, fostering their ability to view the world through an anthropological lens.
